Tokyo, Japan, April 25, 2006—NSK Ltd. has successfully developed a compact high-output electric power steering (EPS) system for use in 3-liter class passenger vehicles by adopting a high-strength gear in the speed reduction mechanism.
The market for EPS systems, which help improve emissions and fuel economy, has expanded from use in minivehicles and compact vehicles to now include larger 3-liter class passenger cars. Downscaling the speed reduction mechanism, which transfers torque from the motor, while simultaneously increasing load capacity was one of the more daunting requirements that had to be met before qualifying for use in larger mid-size class passenger cars. NSK has successfully met the requirements with its latest development—a speed reduction mechanism that has been designed for enhanced durability; is able to withstand higher torque operating conditions; and functions with less friction than previous models. NSK’s new EPS system is the perfect fit for practical use in 3-liter class passenger cars.
Features
· Newly developed resin material for gear
Compared to conventional products, this new EPS gear takes advantage of the superior durability (nearly twice that of conventional products) offered by a newly developed high-strength resin material that is used for the speed reduction mechanism.
· Optimum gear configuration
NSK optimized the gear configuration and enlarged the contact area of the gear itself. This resulted in less contact pressure during gear engagement and helped to significantly reduce torque fluctuations.
· Newly developed specialized grease
A product-specific grease was specially developed for this application to improve lubricating conditions of the gear surface areas operating under heavy loads. This proprietary grease significantly reduces gear friction when compared to conventional products, and doubles as a guard against excessive wear.
NSK has introduced this newly developed speed reduction mechanism into all EPS systems as a standard specification with sales promotions and commercialization having already begun. NSK projects sales of two million units in 2010.
